North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust is entering a truly exciting time of change to deliver high quality effective and safe care for patients who come through the front door of our hospitals. North Cumbria University Hospitals is buddied up with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust whilst it moves toward formal acquisition. This post will be employed by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust but be based in North Cumbria.
The Trust has recognised that there is a national shortage of candidates for Consultant vacancies in some specialties. So, in order to attract suitable candidates to posts which the Trust has defined as hard to fill, the Trust has recently agreed to award a recruitment premium to posts which are specifically agreed by the organisation. This role has been defined as such a post, and it is proposed to award a recruitment premium for up to four years. The recruitment premium we would like to offer for this post is in addition to the salary for the individual post; this will be paid as a supplement and will be pensionable. Typically the rate will be 10% of starting salary.
Applications are invited for four new consultant posts in Acute Medicine to extend our current complement. The acute physicians will have the opportunity to develop a sub specialist interest and contribute to our North Cumbria specialist services. For example we would support input to diabetes and endocrinology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, renal medicine, elderly care and stroke medicine. Other specialty interests that would help meet the business unit and Trust strategic aims would also be considered. These posts are pivotal to the on-going development of our acute physician model providing senior clinician shop floor presence seven days a week to allow a more coherent and consistent approach to the management of patients presenting as medical emergencies. The successful candidate will be based at either the Cumberland Infirmary or at the new West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven (due to open in spring 2015) but as with other colleagues will be expected to contribute to care on either site.
The new West Cumberland Hospital which is due to be commissioned Autumn 2015 and has been designed to provide an integrated Emergency Floor with Emergency Medicine, Ambulatory Emergency Care, Emergency Assessment/short stay unit and Out of Hours services all co-located in the same service area.
We are seeking consultants with drive, commitment and enthusiasm who will bring a consistent focus on high performance and quality of care, working collaboratively with colleagues and providing clinical leadership to the wider team.
We have established an acute physician model on both sites with the ultimate aim of providing consultant presence 8am till 10pm on site, whereby our acute care physicians (ACP) provide cover for our acute medical assessment and short stay units, 8am till 6pm Monday to Friday (on both sites). As our cohort of ACPs expands their input will extend to some weekend cover. Our specialty physicians will share the contribution to the “physician of the day” out of hours and at weekends.
We have established Nurse Practitioner led Ambulatory Emergency Care units on both sites.
Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for this post on a part-time basis. Visits can be arranged for candidates and their families in order to appreciate the quality of life our Hospitals and the surrounding area can offer.
Applicants must hold valid registration with the GMC, and have possession of, entry on the GMC specialist register for acute medicine via relevant CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), relevant CESR or European Community Rights
